Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs) play a crucial role in the design and implementation of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Human-Machine-Interface (HMI) systems, particularly in industrial processes. Human-machine interfaces (HMI) serve a similar purpose, only for local machines (while SCADA is a remote monitoring system).

It provides a detailed overview of the physical layout, components, and control logic of a system. P&IDs are commonly used in industries such as oil and gas, chemical processing, power generation, and water treatment, among others.
The primary purpose of a P&ID in the context of SCADA/HMI is to facilitate the efficient operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of industrial processes. By depicting the flow of fluids, materials, and energy, as well as the control devices and sensors, a P&ID helps engineers, operators, and maintenance personnel understand the system's functionality.
